Our Preserves

Floraglades Preserve is a 70 acre preserve in Glades County, Florida.
The land is privately owned, but managed by Floraglades Foundation, and deed restriction guarantee it will never be developed. It was originally established by the late Jessie Freeling, a friend and associate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. http://www6.miami.edu/english/msdouglas/
Its heavily wooded terrain includes a cypress and hardwood slough
supporting a diverse array of upland and wetland flora. A limited number of visitors are allowed, accompanied by an approved guide. This preserve is used in the teaching of the Wetlands Habitat module of Florida's Master Naturalist program. An outstanding feature is a virgin cypress tree.

Moya Preserve is a 120 acre preserve, owned by Floraglades Foundation. This land is also heavily wooded with varied terrain. Running through the middle is Jack's Branch, a seasonally active waterway. Among this preserve's most notable features are nesting swallow-tailed kites and abundant  alligators. Like Floraglades Preserve, it supports species that are found in north and central Florida wetlands, but are seldom seen south of the Caloosahatchee River.

Other projects:  Floraglades Foundation is working with Save Our Creeks to establish a museum featuring the ecology and cultural history of the Fisheating Creek area. Efforts are also underway in Glades County to preserve land along wildlife corridors connecting larger habitats. Fighting exotic invasive species is an ongoing endeavor.
